MEGA HAIR ISSUE!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO THE FIRST BEAUTY BUZZ ISSUE OF 2010!

Last year I received many inquiries from women about their hair related dilemmas and thought it would be a great idea to devote an entire issue to it. The MEGA HAIR ISSUE has enlisted the help of NYC hair pro Philip Pelusi (creator of Tela Beauty Organics) for REAL answers that most definitely get to "the root" of it all. Pelusi spills the beans about his TOP SECRET weapons for fabulous hair, shares QUICK and EASY ways to get the salon quality RESULTS you're expecting, and takes the guess work out of shopping by telling you exactly what you need to be looking for. Our top picks on everything from shampoos/conditioners and treatments to styling aids, tools, and techniques. No matter what type of hair you have or what questions have been taunting you, you WILL find the answers right here!

FINE/LIMP HAIR
Hair that has little to no density and lifeless in appearance. This type of hair is the most fragile and therefore requires the most care when it comes to styling and maintenance. It's imperative to be very selective when choosing products because the ingredients can literally make or break your delicate tresses. Can't wait another minute to try our pics? Just click onto product names to purchase now!

What To Look For

As Philip states, " look for ingredients such as Burdock, Horsetail, Sprouted Soy, and Sage. They create texture and structure in fine hair and, because they are also strengthening proteins, help to protect the integrity of the hair strand as well as add tremendous texture and body."

Aphogee Keratin Green Tea Restructurizer
(protector)
Spritz on healing antioxidants and proteins that not only "mend" hair but also protect your tresses from heat styling.

Ken Paves HairDo Hair Extensions (fun option)
Your hair can look as thick and long as you always dreamed with these super easy, natural looking, and functional faux pieces.

Styling Tips
Always begin by gently cleansing hair with a volumizing shampoo and follow with a compatible lightweight conditioner applied to the hair shaft and ends, NOT the roots. On towel dried hair, apply a small amount of a heat protecting product to hair and comb through with a wide tooth comb. Next, add a root lift to roots OR volumizing spray to hair to add body and shine. Let dry naturally or use a low heat setting.

DRY, BRITTLE, OR OVER PROCESSED HAIR

Hair that is overworked and dehydrated, visibly unruly and parched,
color appears dull and faded, and overall void of necessary moisture.

What To Look For

Herbal ingredients such as Marshmellow Root, Mountain Ladybell, Cassia Angustifolia Seed are of the right molecular size so they can easily penetrate the hair fabric and help create long lasting hydration in the hair. Pure oils like Argan, Jojoba, and Acai also add much needed moisture.

(ultra deep conditioner)
A really effective mega conditioning treatment that smooths and softens hair that's too dry or just won't behave.
Kerastase Lumiere Nutri-Sculpt
Surprisingly lightweight, just a dab transforms troubled ends into a healthy and defined finish.

Styling Tips
Begin by cleansing and conditioning hair with deeply hydrating shampoos/conditioners. While hair is still wet, apply products that will protect your hair from heat styling while imparting moisture. Dry as necessary and finish with a grooming aid that locks in moisture for overall protection.

OILY HAIR

Sebaceous glands
that are overactive and secrete too much sebum are the primary reason for oily hair and scalp . When not cleansed frequently, the result is hair that appears unpleasantly greasy. Regular upkeep can really help hair to maintain a sense of balance and keep oil from taking over.

What To Look For

Sugar Cane, Lemon, Orange, and Sugar Maple help balance PH levels of the scalp and reduce oil production.

Products
We Love
Frederic Fekkai Apple Cider Clarifying Shampoo
Deeply cleanses hair without stripping and uses rosemary and verbena to nourish and protect.

Kairos Heat Protectant Clear Style Thermal Spray
A heat protector spray that also guards against breakouts! And without compromising the shiny results you're after!

Styling Tips

Use a shampoo that gently cleanses hair and scalp. Stay clear of harsh detergents like Sodium Laurel Sulfate that will only aggravate the oily condition causing the scalp to produce even more.
Use a weightless conditioner to detangle, encourage shine, and finish with weightless styling grooms that work from the inside of the hair fiber instead of just coating the outside.

CURLY HAIR

Tresses that naturally display a wave or curl pattern varying in shape and density; this frizzy hair type expands and separates when exposed to varying degrees of heat and humidity.

What To Look For

Look for frizz reducing cleansing/conditioning products that contain Cassia Angustifolia Seed and Solomon's Seal. These ingredients help bind moisture and smooth out frizz naturally. Styling products should contain Sweet Almond Oil, Acia Oil, or Shea Butter to smooth hair while locking in moisture. Silicone-based products also are effective in taming frizz and can be another alternative.

Styling Tips

Curly hair, whether worn curly or straight, can be quite a challenge. Pelusi suggests to first shampoo and condition hair and gently blot dripping moisture from hair instead of towel drying. Next apply a styling aid to wet hair, making sure each strand is lightly coated from root to tip. Comb through and style. For a curly result, gently push waves into their natural shape by blow drying with a diffuser attachment. For straight hair, section off into clips and blow dry each section until smooth using a boar bristle brush.

COLOR TREATED HAIR

When coloring your hair, what you are essentially doing is replacing and/or covering up already existing pigments found in the hair shaft. So it's important to care for this type of hair with products that seal color in tightly and protect it from the environment.

What To Look For

Philip suggests looking for ingredients like Reishi Mushroom, Chinese Foxglove, and Ku Shen; all of which are powerful antioxidants and prevent hair color from fading. Also, organic plant proteins strengthen hair so look for Sprouted Soy and Horsetail as well.

ther thermal protection and to add necessary moisture to the hair. Blow dry on a medium to low heat setting and finish with SPF enhanced styling aids for maximum environmental protection.

Philip Pelusi's Secret Hair Weapons
1. Always keep a spray on, resin and powder free dry shampoo on hand to refresh and restyle hair.
2. Apply a weightless groom product containing SPF onto scalp and hair prior to applying any other styling products. Philip says "Just as we should apply an SPF skin care cream to protect our face everyday, we should also do the same for our hair and scalp."

Pelusi's
Hair Do's And Don'ts
1. DON'T use a flat iron on hair without applying a protecting and strengthening product that is enhanced by heat.
2. DO always use a conditioner after shampooing, even in small amounts, to add weightless moisture, color protection, and strength.
3. DON'T detangle wet hair with anything other than a wide tooth comb or without first applying a weightless detangling product. This especially goes for those with long hair. Using these tools will help to protect the hair fabric and keep hair from snapping and breaking.
4. DO use a super gentle brush whenever styling or grooming. Look for one with a soft pad and a combination of natural boar bristles for grooming and shine. Choose soft resin bristles for detangling.
5. DO opt for high quality flat irons containing ceramic plates that can glide over the hair surface easily.
6. DO look for curling irons where the barrel swivels; allowing you to change the direction of the curl easily and create modern styles.
7. DO select blowdryers that offer a few settings for air speed and temperature so that you can control the amount of heat that you are putting onto the hair.
